ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS

This Demonstration Kit takes advantage of the fact that water is heavier than oil.  Each drop of colored water from the pump forms a sphere and drops evenly through the mineral oil, collects and coalesces at the bottom of the acrylic tube, and repeats the cycle.  The click of the pump is attention-getting and the moving string of colored beads is a bit hypnotizing. Good for a show.....

  1. Install the pump in the direction indicated, and use the screwdriver to tighten the screws and fix the pump to the base.  Attach the acrylic tube to the pump with the union, and use the pliers to lock the cylinder to the stand.  Connect ground wire to base of acrylic tube.  Remove the yellow plug at the top of the pump head and install the discharge valve hand-tight.

  1. Using the beaker, pour in about 300 mL of water.  Mix in a generous amount of food coloring with the stirring spoon (the drops will be much lighter in color than this solution).  Use the funnel to slowly pour the water into the bottom of the tube to the scribed line on outside of cylinder.  (Note:   Water splashes will smear on the side of the cylinder and muddy up the show).

  1. After carefully removing the funnel (to avoid getting any of the food-colored water on the cylinder wall), pour the mineral oil very gently into the tube.  Add the oil until it is within about 3" from the top.
